A Student of Daniel Owoseni’s Leap Academy of Dance in Badagry, 11 year-old, Anthony Mmesoma Madu has accepted a scholarship with the prestigious American Ballet Theater School in New York.
Following the video of the Nigerian ballet dancer, Anthony Mmesoma Madu dancing in the rain which was uploaded on Instagram in June this year, viewed hundreds of thousands of times over and also had the academy social media channels flooded with different news, the ABT School in New York has offered him a scholarship to enable him attend the ABT Virtual Young Dancer Summer Workshop, a three-week intensive programme.
Madu is one of a dozen students between the ages of 5 and 12 at Daniel Owoseni’s Leap Academy of Dance in Badagry, Lagos, which was founded a little over three years ago.
Recently, the Founder of the Academy, Owoseni himself, worked with the rising Nigerian Menswear Label Orange Culture who outfitted Madu for a series of portraits days before the news that the young dancer had accepted a scholarship with the prestigious American Ballet Theater School in New York.
Beyond the unprecedented attention that the academy has received from all over the world, Owoseni is clearly most impressed by the unwavering commitment and dedication of his own pupils.
During his zoom call with Vogue, he said “There’s a saying here that nothing makes a teacher happier than a student who wants to learn, can you see what’s going on behind me? There’s a torrential downpour outside and they’re getting ready for class. Who wouldn’t be proud of these children?”
