Sanitation Officers Urged to Enlighten Residents on Destiling Drainage Channels

The Honourable Commissioner for Local Governments and Community Relations, Mrs.Yetunde Arobieke has charged sanitation officers in all Local Governments and Local Council Development Areas to enlighten and monitor residents on the desilting of drainage channels in their communities.

She gave the charge during her inspection of drainage channels at Badagry LGA, Badagry West LCDA and Olorunda LCDA recently, stating that Sanitation Officers have been saddled with the responsibility of maintaining a clean environment, hence the need to regularly monitor residents and ensure they desilt their tertiary drainage channels.

The Commissioner explained that “Sanitation officers are not only meant to monitor residents’ compliance, but also enlighten them on the need to ensure that their environments are kept clean always”.

Arobieke reiterated the need for the Chairmen of LGs and LCDAs to hold periodic stakeholder-meetings in their areas as part of efforts to educate residents on the health benefits in keeping their drainages free from silt.

The Chairman, Badagry Local Government, Mr. Onilude Olusegun assured the Commissioner that stakeholder-meetings geared towards sensitising residents in the community will commence soon in the area.

Similarly, the Council Chairmen of Badagry West, Mr. Gbenu Joseph and Olorunda LCDA, Mr. Samson Olatunde commended the government on the newly introduced “Waste-to-Wealth” and “Blue-Box” policies, assuring the visiting team of their determination to strictly enforce compliance of the new initiative in their respective communities.
