Gbenu’s 2020 Democracy Day Address to Badagry-West

My Good People in Badagry West LCDA

It gives me great pleasure to address you on this year’s Democracy Day, It is quite unique in all forms and very palatable to understand that JUNE 12 has come to stay as NIGERIA DEMOCRACY DAY

As we all know that Democracy Day marks the day the military handed over power to an elected civilian government in 1999, marking the beginning of the longest continuous civilian rule since Nigeria’s independence from colonial rule in 1960, it is should be noted that this is also the beginning of a better Nigeria, hence returning the power to the people.

My good people, Until June 6, 2018, democracy day was held annually on May 29. These were done to commemorate the democratic election of MKO Abiola on June 12, 1993, in what has been adjudged to be Nigeria’s freest and fairest elections devoid of ethnicity and religious sentiments. It was, however, cancelled by the Ibrahim Babangida Junta.

It is on this note that it became imperative that I personally commend the selfless effort of our number one citizen, President Mohammad Buhari, our APC National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other well meaning citizens who agitated for the review of  democracy day in Nigeria.

This day, I reassure my good people that my administration will continue to practice an all inclusive system of government with stronger civic engagement.

As part of local government’s achievement, we have been able to revamp the primary education sector by constructing a befitting six blocks of classrooms with furniture’s, treatment water plant, computers, generator and other facilities across four (4) primary schools in the Local Council Development Area.

As a government of the people, my administration have not also relent in ensuring the life’s and property of the people are kept through provision of drugs to the PHCs, distribution of palliatives during the COVID 19 to residents, give support fund to the aged and widows, consistent monthly peace and security meeting and many more.

We have also constructed a perimeter fence at Primary Health Care, Sakpo, we also constructed a drainage bridge along Farasime road to ameliorate the hardship faced by the residents during rainy season. Free GCE and JAMB forms were give to youths with different training programme such as computer, coconut craft, etc. Some of our students were also given scholarship to study in the university with countless assistance on different grounds.

My good people, a lot has been done but will like to summarise it for the purpose of this address. We will continue to do our best to meet your needs and continue to serve you better.

As we celebrate our heroes today, we acknowledge the fact that there are still roadblocks to Nigeria’s democracy, however we will continue to do our best to ensure the best of Democratic practice is sustained in Nigeria.

Happy Democracy Day!

God Bless Nigeria!

God Bless Lagos State!

God Bless Badagry!

God Bless Badagry West!

Hon Gbenu Henugbe, Executive Chairman, Badagry-West LCDA
