COVID-19: BLG Adopts Town Crier in Disseminating Information to People Without Internet Access

Mr. Olusegun Onilude, Chairman BLG

In light of the recent global lockdown as a result of the Novel Coronavirus otherwise known as COVID-19, Badagry Local Government is set to tow the line of the Federal Government of Nigeria and the Sanwo-olu led Lagos State Government administration by ensuring compliance with the measures that will help contain the virus.

First on the priority is the adoption of ancient long means of communication; use of a Town Crier which will take effect from today 24th day of March, 2020. The Town Crier is saddled with the responsibility of informing the general public most especially those without internet access with preventive measures, social distancing, isolation for those who have symptoms and doling out emergency numbers to reach. The Town Crier has been mobilized to work with effect immediately.

In line with the the Executive Order of the state governor on limiting social gathering to a maximum of 20 people and to keep a reasonable distance of 1 metre, the Chairman of Badagry Local Government has set up a Task Force to enforce this directive in Badagry. The Task Force that is headed by the Vice Chairman, Mr. Andrew Akotomeh will be effective until the pandemic has been declared under containment by the World Health Organisation and the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

While carrying out the above measures, the council is also prepared for the worst case scenario with an emergency isolation Centre located at St. Thomas Primary School, Badagry with the Medical Officer of Health as the Technical Director of the centre. The people of Badagry are expected to report themselves to this place if they have the symptoms or have had physical contact with anyone confirmed positive of COVID-19. The Chairman in wake of these decisions said that people should not be afraid of the condition of the centre as efforts are currently ongoing to make it home away from home.

The Secretary to the Local Government, Hon. Ajape also encouraged the people to wash their hands regularly, drink water at intervals, keep their distance at 1 metre from the nearest person and eat as healthy as they can.

Signed:
Sewedo Olalekan Samuel
Chief Press Secretary to the Chairman,
Badagry Local Government.
24 March, 2020.
