Badagry West Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Lagos State, has held a one-day sensitization programme on rape and child abuse for mothers in the area on Saturday 15th August, 2020.
During the opening charge, the Chairperson of the event, Mrs. Esther Gbenu, who is the wife of the LCDA Chairman, urged parents to stand against rape and child abuse, highlighting that they are serious crimes against humanity which can destroy the future of the victims.
In her speech, the Guest Speaker, Mrs Damilola James of DGS Chauffeur Nig. Ltd., urged mothers to create time for their children even when their fathers are not available.
“Communication with your children always enable them to have trust in their mothers, let them know that their private part should be kept private, use every weapon you have as a mother to raise them to become future leaders or responsible citizens of the country,” she said.
Mrs. James pleaded with mothers and guardians to desist from sending their children and wards to hawk on the street, stating that the hawking should be done by parents if necessary, instead of exposing the children to danger.
She therefore urged parents to discourage their children from collecting money from outsiders and endeavor to expose the attempt and act of rape at all times.
In the same vein, the Coordinator of Badagry Women Forum, Mrs. Sewede Pot-Balogun, urged parents to avoid stigmatizing rape victims, adding that they should train their male children to be responsible citizens.
Furthering, the Supervisor for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA) in the LCDA, Mrs. Sesi Ogungbe added that mothers should report rape cases to her office, as the office is always available to entertain complains after which such will be reported to relevant authorities and agencies for necessary actions.
